In a recent ruling, a Manhattan judge ordered Ripple Labs to pay the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission about $125 million in fines over allegations that it improperly sold the cryptocurrency XRP.
It’s important to note that back in March, Ripple Labs General Counsel Stuart Alderothy revealed that the SEC had originally sought $2 billion in fines and penalties in its case against Ripple Labs.
The court ruled that Ripple’s programmatic sales of XRP to retail customers through exchanges did not violate federal securities laws. As a result, the SEC’s attempt to appeal that portion of the ruling was unsuccessful.
